Try This

For my devotional this morning, I was told to do some things that really refreshed my view to the topic of giving thanks. I’d like you to do the same– set aside 15-20 minutes to fully get the calm of this practice.

1. Go read Psalm 75. Just take a few minutes to let the words sink in– read it a second time and get to know the phrases more expectantly.

2. Grab a piece of paper; it can be lined, it can be blank, whatever. Make a list of everything you are thankful for– you don’t need to include lists of people’s names, just say ‘Family’ or ‘Friends’ as a collective category. Everything you are thankful for.

3. Go through Psalm 75 again and note the reasons the psalmist is thanking God. Write these reasons on the back of your paper.

4. Stop and ponder these reasons– how do they make you feel? Write the answer to that underneath what the psalmist is saying.

5. Read the passage once more and let all the things you’re thankful for wash over you as you think about the reasons the psalmist is writing.

6. Write your own Psalm (poem) about why you’re thankful to God and let your reasons and the initial psalmists reasons influence what you write. You don’t need to show this to anyone, let it be a prayer between you and God.
